Lucy says her four daughters, Christina, Celestina, Augustina and Gifty “are always happy to come to school because of the free meals”. Lucy can be very proud of this as she is one of the cooks preparing the school meals every day since the ATE feeding programme began. She was previously unemployed but was nominated as a cook at a meeting held with representatives from nearby villages to prepare for the feeding to take place.
Lucy has certainly noticed differences in the school during the three years that ATE has been providing support to Karbo Primary. “The feeding has improved the number of children in the school. At the moment there is a new child starting every day”. Lucy explains that the number of children in KG1 in particular is increasing because more parents are getting to hear about the free feeding. Lucy says that looking at the children’s faces she can tell that many are coming to school hungry. She says that they often say that they are sick when in fact they are hungry. They are allowed to go home but they rather wait till they are fed and then they go back to class. They are simply hungry not sick.
Aside from the school feeding, Lucy is grateful for the other support ATE provide with free school uniforms, health insurance and school books for her daughters as she would not have been able to afford the full amount. She feels that ATE is an organisation that really helps a lot and she wishes for a long life for the NGO.
