On the first anniversary of launching our Technology Zones – and after an amazing 25,000 individual visits – Nandom Learning and Tech Coordinator King Noah Na-ibo celebrates the transformation of a generation.
The Tech Zone in Nandom is more than a room with computers – it is a doorway to global opportunity. Today, a child learns to type and search and code; tomorrow, that same child will design solutions, create businesses and lift their family out of limitation. When we empower a child with technology, we are not just shaping a career – we are transforming a generation.
In early 2025, Action Through Enterprise opened its Technology and Learning Zones in our two Inclusion Centres in Lawra and Nandom. First came computers and the Zones immediately were full of children – many who had never seen a computer before – getting a chance, at last, to try using a mouse and a keyboard. Gradually, working with my Lawra colleague Michael Frimpong Gyimah, we developed an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Programme which includes basic digital literacy skills such as use of Office 365 applications, typing accuracy and speed, understanding the components of a computer, design and basic coding.
Then, in May, we switched on the internet – and suddenly children were connected to the whole world. We worked with them on how to use the internet safely and responsibly for research. They use the web for projects and support with their homework – and, of course, for games! Every month, hundreds of children visit our Zones. I am especially proud of 9 year-old Annabel, who has taken to computing like a natural – she’s even teaching some of the older children!
“I was curious about computers so I wanted to know what is there, I feel confident among my peers since I also know how to use the computer. I want to be a doctor. If I can use the computer now, I would become perfect when I grow up.” Annabel (right), aged 9
My dream is to see every child in Nandom confidently use technology not just for entertainment, but for innovation. I dream of raising digital creators, not just digital consumers – young minds who will compete globally, support their families and return to build the very community that raised them. What we are building is bigger than a programme. In communities like Nandom, access changes everything – mindset, income, exposure, confidence. The ATE Tech Zones are not just teaching technology. We are coordinating hope.
There’s also a huge ripple effect across the whole community, with entrepreneurs and older students using the free WiFi and computers for research, marketing, exam prep and access to courses.
The Tech Zone is planting seeds. The harvest will be software engineers, digital entrepreneurs, cyber security experts and leaders who will one day tell the world:
“I started in Nandom”.
