In January we begin providing free school meals to 211 students at Dowine Junior High School! Free school meals are a vital support for a child’s education. Families in this area experience five months of food insecurity every year and for three of those months, most families can only afford one meal a day. So we are thrilled that the Ghana Education Service has endorsed us to expand our support to make Dowine the third school that we provide with school meals in Lawra District.
Habib has been interacting with the Headteacher, Parent Teacher Association and other stakeholders to prepare for the school feeding programme to start. Recently Habib led a team to Dowine to introduce ATE and meet the children and teachers. The team weighed and measured the children, gathering data to serve as a baseline for our monitoring and evaluation. This will help us check the impact of the free school meals and the healthy growth of the children. The students were very excited by the whole process and are looking forward to the forthcoming feeding.
ATE are also extremely proud of the work being carried out by the community to build the school kitchen. This is a show of their commitment to welcome ATE’s support and share the responsibility to make the school feeding happen.
A massive thank you to everyone who is making this possible, from those of you who donate to ATE, fundraise for us, or those of you who share our stories amongst your friends and colleagues. This enables us to provide funds to the people in the Dowine community, who are now building the facilities to be able to cook the school meals for another 211 wonderful school children!
